Vietnam’s S&P Global Manufacturing PMI rose to 53.3 in August 2026 from 52.9 in July, according to data published on 1 September, marking the sector’s highest reading since February and its sixteenth consecutive month of expansion. A reading above 50 indicates growth in factory activity, and the latest figure placed Vietnam comfortably ahead of the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction.
Fastest Output Growth in Two Years
Manufacturing output rose for a sixteenth straight month and at its fastest pace in more than two years, according to the survey, while new orders expanded at their quickest rate since October 2025. The improvement placed Vietnam among the strongest performers in Southeast Asia’s manufacturing sector for the month, ahead of several regional peers whose PMI readings were more mixed. Survey respondents pointed to stronger demand from both domestic and export customers, alongside improved input availability, as factors supporting the pickup in production.
A Regional Contrast
Vietnam’s gain came even as neighbouring Indonesia’s manufacturing sector showed a more uneven picture earlier in the year, with its PMI dipping before recovering into the third quarter. The divergence highlights how individual Southeast Asian economies are being affected differently by shifts in global demand and supply-chain routing decisions by multinational manufacturers, many of which have spent recent years adding production capacity across several countries rather than concentrating it in one.
Why It Matters
Vietnam has emerged as one of the principal beneficiaries of companies diversifying manufacturing away from single-country supply chains, and a sustained acceleration in factory output and new orders suggests that trend is continuing rather than fading. For an economy heavily reliant on export-led manufacturing, faster growth in new orders in particular points to firmer demand from overseas buyers heading into the final months of the year, a signal that will be closely watched by policymakers and factory owners alike as they plan capacity for the coming year.
