Hard Rock International has opened its first hotel in Malta, a 397-room resort in St. George’s Bay that represents a EUR350 million direct investment in the island’s tourism sector. The property opened to guests on 2 September 2026 and was marked with a star-studded grand opening ceremony, including the brand’s traditional guitar smash, attended by nearly 2,000 guests.
Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela joined DB Group chairman Silvio Debono and Holly Tiger, vice chairwoman for the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which owns Hard Rock International, at the celebration. Entertainment came from Aiden, Malta’s Eurovision 2026 representative, alongside Ira Losco and Shaun Farrugia.
Eleven pools and a music-themed identity
The resort’s amenities include 11 swimming pools, among them a rooftop cantilever pool, a dedicated beach club, a 3,800 square metre spa and wellness area, and a 466 square metre ballroom for events. Its food and drink offer spans more than ten restaurants, bars, lounges and clubs, anchored by a Hard Rock Cafe. Thomas Guss, the hotel’s general manager, said the team was “thrilled to finally welcome our guests and the local community.”
A statement of confidence in Maltese tourism
db Group chief executive Robert Debono said the developers “can’t wait to show guests the rich culture and incredible views that Malta is famous for,” while John Rees, Hard Rock’s senior vice president, called the opening “a significant investment in Malta, with hundreds of new jobs created.” The property becomes one of the largest hotel investments St. George’s Bay has seen in recent years, adding to a stretch of coastline already dense with hotels, restaurants and nightlife.
Why it matters
For Malta, a small island economy heavily reliant on visitor spending, a project of this scale signals continued investor confidence even as European hospitality markets face a mixed year. The hundreds of jobs created span everything from culinary and spa roles to entertainment and events, adding meaningful capacity to the local hospitality workforce. Whether the bet pays off will depend on how well the new rooms perform once the opening buzz settles into a normal operating season.
