The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee formally inaugurated Thomas Gibson as its 10th chancellor on 25 September, a ceremony held at the university’s Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts and timed to coincide with the institution’s 70th anniversary, according to a university announcement.

Delegates From Across the Country

More than 25 universities, colleges and academic institutions sent delegates to the ceremony, including 20 fellow presidents and chancellors, the university said, reflecting the scale of the occasion within the broader Wisconsin and Midwest higher education community. The inauguration week carried the theme “Always Dream Bigger,” and the event was emceed by Visit Milwaukee president and CEO Peggy Williams-Smith.

Three Strategic Priorities

In his inaugural address, Gibson outlined three priorities for the university: advancing student success, elevating innovation and deepening community engagement, according to the university. Gibson was selected by the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents in March 2025 and began his tenure as chancellor in July 2025, having previously served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 2021 to 2025 and as a professor in the School of Education before that. University officials said the months between his arrival and the formal inauguration were used deliberately to let him settle into the role before the ceremonial events began.

A Milestone Anniversary

Holding the inauguration on UWM’s 70th anniversary was a deliberate choice, the university said, intended to link Gibson’s tenure symbolically to the institution’s broader history as a public research university serving the Milwaukee region. University officials said the coming year would include additional events marking the anniversary alongside the rollout of Gibson’s strategic priorities.

Why It Matters

A formal inauguration months after a leader has already taken up the role is largely ceremonial, but the scale of institutional representation at UWM’s event signals the standing the university holds within the wider Wisconsin higher education system. Gibson’s stated focus on innovation and community engagement will be watched closely as public universities across the US continue to navigate enrolment pressures and questions about the value of a degree.
